Project Overview
Gumtree is one of the most famous local marketplace apps in Australia, with an average of 7 million unique visitors each month (2020 Gumtree report). The project goal was to research, strategise and design efficient and satisfying experiences to browse, buy, and sell secondhand items and make Gumtree the most competitive app among the other similar marketplace apps.

Purpose of Re-design

Hypothesis-driven Design Process

Assumptions

Assumption 1

The app design looks dated compared to other similar shopping apps, such as Facebook Marketplace or eBay.

Assumption 2

The app has poor usability because of an insufficient visual hierarchy between information and too much information on one page.

Testing The Hypothesis
- Survey

User interviews were conducted with millenials who are the main users of Gumtree. We found most millenials think Gumtree has a strong brand identity but needs to be more reliable and easier to use.

Redesign Goal

  • Clear Hierarchy and Layout

  • Personalised Service

  • Enhance User Credibility

  • Time Saving Communication Process

Research & Discover

Secondary Research

We conducted secondary research to deepen our understanding of the target audience and discover their needs.

Key Findings

(Source: Gumtree Report 2021)

68%

68% of millennials are concerned about their ability to pay for household expenses such as food, utility bills and internet, compared to only 53% of Baby Boomers.

$7,000

Millennials have 17 unwanted items on average and the highest estimated value of unwanted items ($7,000).

$9,000

Millennials achieved top average earnings per seller ($9,000) in 2020.

60%

60% of millennials buy something second hand at least once a year or more.

Competitor Analysis

We analysed Facebook Marketplace and eBay as direct competitors to develop effective redesign strategies. They both had a well-designed website and application interface. And they also had their own distinctive features that help users make a decision quickly and feel engaged.

Main Functions

  • Social media
  • Sell and buy used items

Competitive Reviews

  • Easy navigation
  • Customised listings
  • Inconvenience of having to use seperate messaging app

Distinctive Features

  • Various postage and payments options
  • eBay Money Back Guarantee

Empathise

User Interviews

We interviewed 10 people to better understand their experiences, not only with similar marketplaces but also the Gumtree app, and what they consider importantly when buying used items. Key findings and quotes regarding Gumtree app.

Interview findings

Navigation

Too much information causes fatigue and makes it hard to navigate in the app.

Seller’s Info

90% of interviewees consider seller’s information important for judging their reliability.

Review and Rating

70% of interviewees think that reviews and ratings are key factors when deciding seller’s credibility.

AI Recommendations

"I don’t feel engaged in this platform. Feel like I’m using just temporarily for a specific purpose sometimes."

Personas

Based on findings from the survey, three distinct personas (buyer, seller, and browser) were created to keep design decisions aligned with the user’s needs.

Define & Synthesise

Pain points & Solutions

Combining all insights from our research results, four key pain points and solutions to solve these issues were defined.

01. Poor Navigation / Unclear Interface

  • Time wasted sorting through unnecessary categories

  • Poor information hierarchy
Clear Hierarchy and Layout

02. Lack of Customised Experience

  • Random item listings unrelated to user’s interest

Personalised Service

03. Unreliable Transaction Process

  • Unverified users

  • Insufficient seller’s ratings and review

Enhance User Credibility

04. Time Consuming Communication

  • Limited number of pre-defined questions to choose from

  • Message function unavailable on a listing page

Time Saving Communication

User Flow

To plan how the app will function, we mapped the basic flow of main functions to determine what steps users need to take to reach a goal.

Information Architecture

Information Architecture was built to illustrate the overall navigation structure and highlight what has been updated.

Elements in purple have been updated.

Wireframe

Low & high fidelity wireframes were created to develop ideas and gain feedback from users. Uncovered frictions led to further refinements and improvements towards a user friendly design and more intuitive navigation.

Future Steps

In a later update, we would like to run quick unmoderated usability tests, like first-click tests, session recordings and 5-second tests, to ensure the user flow is intuitive and the app is easy to navigate.

And we would apply these redesigned features to other Gumtree services for an integrated user experience across the Gumtree platform.

What did you learn?

As product designers, we learnt to design the app based on user needs and feedback rather than personal preference. We had to change some of our initial ideas as these were not ideal for users. Having conducted our own research, including user interviews and gathering feedback, we gained insights that helped us develop a product we believe would provide more efficient and reliable service.

What would you have done differently?

Given more time, we would have conducted user interview with more people and also one-to-one in depth interviews to more comprehensively characterise user’s pain points and needs. In addition, we would have included motion graphics and further illustrations to make the app more engaging and dynamic, and enable users to navigate the app in a more enjoyable way.
